Its legend was laid as the revered track of death
All who had the (mis)fortune to go its way
Go past the river Mungo especially they say
Came back bruised, charred, mangled ready for earth.

The very day the marriage was sealed struck tragedy
The short path from Tiko had claimed its prize: all but one.
Blinded, disillusioned, disoriented, she made it to the town.
Still beautiful, desired, raped. For her pains no remedy.

The trusted ruffian guide on her new religion burden,
(Premised on justifying her agony and passivism)
Lightly, gently deposes the new gadget: patriotism.
Now she has all: fiction, peace (a neologism all modern).

Naive elders posing as statesmen say the other demiurge,
For whom thanksgiving for 3 generations is insufficient,
Knows she doesn't need her sight: please purge the urge!
Her progeny perplex and confuse all: not sight proficient?!

Strange things happen to people east of the Mungo river.

12 Years of Glory: The Call

December 17, 5:13 PM. I was almost done with Eyong's shower. The phone rang as I put her on my lap to dry her up. Thinking it could be Glory calling, I made Eyong sit on the toilet and rushed to the dresser where the phone lay. It was Martin, and I was slightly disappointed that it was not Glory, so I picked it up and went back to the bathroom to assist Eyong.  "C'est comment?" he asked. I replied in French that all was ok. He went straight to the point: "Sabine m'a dit que Glory l'a informe qu'elle a le cancer du foi?" he asked.  I could communicate in French, and I heard what he had said, but the words he put together weaved a surreal meaning. And as my consciousness obstinately buoyed the impact to the surface, my knees suddenly felt soft, and they could not hold my weight.  Biya, Marafat, Inoni, Mendoze, ... who is really guilty? News of former Cameroon premier Chief Ephraim Inoni's arraignment has caused mixed reactions from the Cameroonian citizenry. It is very normal for pathos to be the keynote for those who have benefited from the former Prime Minister's largesse. I am here referring to people who eased themselves into positions of significant influence thanks to their relationships with Mr. Inoni. I do not know for sure but the list of his proteges should reflect a broad spectrum of the Cameroon civil service: teachers, judges, fiscal administrators, directors, medical doctors, military, gendarmerie, police force, etc. These people must have been trained through our "grandes ecoles" viz, ENS, ENAM, EMIA, ENPT, ENPURI, etc. The list of beneficiaries also includes business men and women fictive or real who make up the horde of private contractor supplying various materials to the Cameroonian civil service at exorbitant prices....
